What is the difference between Tae Kwon Doe and Kung Fu?

I'm looking for some help in explaining the differences between Tae Kwon Doe and Kung Fu and would appreciate some help.

I'm currently learning Tae Kwon Doe and am trying to convince my mother to let me pick up Kung Fu but she wants to know the differences first.

Thanks for the help.

What is the difference between Tae Kwon Doe and Kung Fu?
Taekwon Do is a Korean EXTERNAL martial art developed by General Choi for the military.

Kung Fu is a general term for any of the Chinese INTERNAL martial arts.

"Kung Fu" is a VERY VAGUE term.

BTW: If you want to learn it well, ANY Internal Martial Art takes a VERY long time to master (maybe decades!) If somebody claims to be able to teach it quickly, it isn't really Kung Fu, it's just EXTERNAL TECHNIQUES!

The Chinese word "kung" (or "gong" as in QiGong) means:

"Requires a long time and a lot of study!"

.
Reply:they're spelled diferently.
Reply:Welcome to the internet my friend.... here, all of your questions no matter how obvious.... can be answered.

Allow me to acquaint you with our search feature as seen in the above section of this web page. Another great resource is www.yahoo.com. From here one can access volumes of information on what we like to call "the world wide web". IN this search bar, if you were to enter Kung fu.... a wealth of knowledge awaits you!

Congratulations on taking some effort into research using the internet! Come back anytime!

Then to further answer your question.... TKD is nothing like Kung Fu. Kung fu will actually (in theory) teach you strikes with hands as well as feet. You honestly can't compare the two at all. Kung fu sometimes tends to use animals to base their forms off of. While TKD doesn't. Tell your mom they are different.... then go to Youtube.com and show her video's....

At least (in theory) Kung fu will teach you some self defence.... TKD will not.
Reply:My question to you is if your a Tae Kwon do student why don't you know how to spell it. There are a lot of differences though. there are alot of stances in kung fu that are not in TKD. the kata is totally different. acrobatics take place in kung fu. different forms of kung fu teach weapons. what you must know about TKD is it was formed as the Koreans form of martial arts for there military. you get the kicks punches and grappling of Oriental martial arts with out the philosophical side to it all. How ever TKD has lost its kick boxing roots and turned into point sparring lessons unless you find a goo teacher. kung fu you will learn the basics of tai chi and other great principles.

these are all up the the student of course. ask your mom to go to some kung fu classes with you and talk to the instructors. if she likes their ideas more she will probably switch you, however if she does not TKD is still a good martial art if you have a good instructor
Reply:Tae Kwon Do (Hand foot method) is a Korean military style of combat that is 70% high kicks to the head; is a very 'hard' style in that it believes in severe knuckle conditioning with powerful blocks and no pressure points; uses no weapons or weapons training; and Tae Kwon Do uses 'linear' striking techniques.

Kung Fu (work hard) is a Chinese style of overall self-defense methods. Kung fu is divided into 'hard' and 'soft' styles and emphasized high kicks in Northern China and emphasized hand techniques in Southern China. There are literally hundreds of styles of Kung Fu, all of which teach the use of weapons such as spear, sword, and halberd (pole axe) plus many more basic and exotic weaponry. Unlike Tae Kwon Do (or karate) kung fu uses a circular methodology to its fighting.

It takes a long time of training to become profecient in most if not all the martial arts and the Koreans and Chinese are known to start children off in the martial arts at age four.

Tae Kwon Do is a young man's style in that it emphasizes so much brute strength in its techniques that not many men over 28 are still spry enough for the high flying kicks and powerful chops and punches.

Kung fu has so many variations that even the elderly, over 60 years of age, have been known to still practice Kung fu.
Reply:Kung Fu I took for real.

But Tae Kwon Do took my money.

TKD also has alot of 5 year old blackbelts running around.
Reply:kung fu uses different balances it is more to hands and feet then just feet it has more to offer in forms kung fu by most accounts is older then TKD but is also more far eastern mysticism TKD is more USA style and teaches more the art then the philosophy
Reply:TKD is a straight forward fighting style %26amp; most useful if 1 vs 1 or 1 vs 2. Kung Fu however is more diverse( try search in wikipedia) ranging from weapon usage to close combat. Kung Fu is, on the other hand, can be use in 1 vs 1 ( such as WING CHUN) or 1 vs 4 or more (such as shaolin kung fu) because kung fu really focus on one`s footwork even though you are learning punching kung fu. That footwork enables you to attack few enemies at once and evading the rest in the same time. You definitely dont see that in TKD, right? No matter what belt in TKD that guy has, he/ she can never beat a true kung fu master bcuz kung fu trains every part of your body like piercing iron balls with your palm and punching candles with a 5 cm distance until its flame is snuffed out by the wind created by your punch. But, kung fu might take you 10 years to master( everyday training) compared to TKD-6 years to master( weekend training)
Reply:it's really weird that this is a question, because we started talking about this in french today... okay, so pretty much, Kung fu has more kicking. That's really all i got...
Reply:As you probably know since you are in TKD, it does teach you self defense. It is more practical than kung fu. Kung fu involves you trying to be an animal, but TKD involves natural human movements and using your bodies mechanics to your advantage. But i really don't know that much about Kung Fu. And i don't believe in this 5 year old black belt crap. it takes a longer time and more experience to get a black belt in TKD. At TKD, we actually do use punches and strikes to put out a candle, it is one of the requirements for testing.

p.s. Good TKD guy could beat a good Kung Fu guy any day

also... a lot depends on the quality of your instructors
Reply:first of all i did TKD for 3years and now i'm doing Shaolin Kung Fu (1 year - present).

'kung fu' can be broken down to many 100s of styles, so really you can't compare 'kung fu' to tkd. '

kung fu' teaches you:

about the philosphy, using your head (your brains), how to grapple, defend yourself against multiple guys that may be slightly bigger than you, learn how to use weapons (attack and defend), etc......
Reply:As far as the technical aspect go, it depends on the style of Kunf Fu. There are a lot of styles %26amp; there is at least as much variation among the styles as there is between Kung Fu %26amp; TKD. It's generally a good idea to stay with a style long enough to know what you are doing (1st degree black belt at least) before switching.
Reply:Well, I take taekwondo, and my dad used to take kung fu. I asked him what the difference was, and he's seen me do taekwondo, and apparrently kung fu is harder. taekwondo apparently takes it much easier and it's way easier to move onto the next belt. Hope that helped!
